My name is Veronika and I am Diana Yampolsky’s student. It’s an on-going process. I have taken several private lessons with her and this workshop was about half a year apart from the last lesson I took. What this showed me was that the gap between lessons was too big, but thankfully, the muscle memory was instilled in me due to the many hours of vocal lessons with Diana. So I am grateful to participate in this workshop. I am looking forward to many more hours of vocal lessons with Diana. Her guidance is not only spiritually uplifting, It’s also giving me the knowledge to be able to perform one day on the big stage and share what I feel and what’s in my heart.

My experiences here today in this workshop with Diana was really cool because her training method implies a scientific structure to how you can approach your voice instead of just pushing and pulling (which was in a lot of the previous vocal training I had – leaving me tired after a workout). I can already feel myself building a great amount of confidence – being able to know that my voice is going to be there to support me through this new technique. So that was my experience today. When I attended the first introductory session and the first lesson with Diana, I really didn’t know what to expect.  I had read many reviews and testimonials but I didn’t really know much about her technique besides that it was innovative.  I wasn’t sure what the title “Vocal Science” had to do with anything.

I was first struck with Diana’s straightforward manner.  She tells it like it is.  I appreciate people who are direct.  Constructive criticism is the only way to really learn and improve.  She had a clear grasp of my potential and where I might be able to take my voice.  I’ve never had any aspirations to turn my singing into something on a professional level, but I appreciated that her lessons were measured (I wasn’t going to be taking endless lessons for years) and defined (we were going to go from A to B).

When we began the exercises, I started to get a feel for what her technique was about.  It was quite different from what my limited foray into voice lessons had taught me.  Diana’s method made sense from a scientific and mathematical standpoint; for example, tying the diaphragm and the breath to the facial muscles, bypassing the strain on the vocal cords.  Also, her visualization of circles of sound, to me, seemed set on a mathematical grid, an x-y axis, with the height and breadth defining the sound.  Her technique also made sense to me on a physical level — the athletic posture to enhance breathing, not the traditional stance of vocal instruction emphasizing the extension of the diaphragm.  Being a math teacher and someone always interested and involved in fitness, all of this appealed to me.

While the system seems elegant and straightforward, putting it into practice was something else entirely.  It sounded easy but was ever so hard to implement.  It’s like superimposing puzzle pieces to allow one small beam of light to pass through.  It’s the alignment of breath, of musculature, of sound, of position.  With Diana’s direction, if you are able to lock all of those things down, you can definitely hear an immediate effect.  It’s like turning on a switch.  Her exercises are an attempt to engrain all of these elements into muscle memory so that it eventually becomes second nature as a singer (or speaker), and something that a speaker/singer can apply to any vocal scenario/song.

It was at this session when I realized the amount of work involved in this process.  Yes, Diana is the professional and magic does happen, but it’s not with putting your share of hard work and persistence into the process.  It’s often very humbling.  It’s often frustrating.  Ultimately; however, when you’re able to get the sound that Diana is after, it’s very satisfying.  The day after this session (on Saturday), I attended a party at a friend’s place.  Many of my friends are musicians and we often jam and sing together.  I sang a number of songs and I felt confident and my voice felt strong.  My friends complimented me on my singing, but it was my husband who defined the difference in my voice.  He said my confidence and my clarity had improved.  Although I hadn’t really been thinking about the techniques I had worked on with Diana apart from breathing posture, I think, at some level, I was already building her techniques into my subconscious.

As my grasp of the facial positions and postures increases, Diana raises the bar in terms of her expectations, as all good teachers do.  She begins to zero in and listen more closely (if that’s possible for her as she can hear the smallest of breaths).  She demands more precision and that’s exactly the direction in which I’m hoping to go.  The number of sessions together are short, and so we need to define the process in as much detail and with as much perfection as possible.  It’s amazing to me that much of our lesson involves just my speaking voice when I’ve come to her for vocal singing lessons.  The results speak for themselves, though.  As they say, you can’t learn to run until you know how to walk.  It’s not about learning how to sing.  It’s about building the blocks that allow for the optimal sound with the least amount of strain on your vocal cords.

Today’s lesson was also eye-opening.  At the end of our session, we began to get into more of the singing techniques and applying them to what I’ve already learned in terms of producing sound effectively.  Diana played a recording of a 3-part singing practice.  I managed to get through the first part and look forward to practicing this again next session.  She also played the other parts for me so that I could understand what was coming next.  The practice was well-constructed in that it kept building in complexity and covered many of the vocal scenarios one might experience in a song:  speeds, tonal changes, clarity – all of these were required as one progressed through the sequence.  I don’t know if I could ever complete this practice – it becomes very advanced – but I consider it a challenge to get as far as I possibly can.  I’m confident that with Diana’s guidance, I’ll do just that.

“Rachel: I am happy to help. First my story – over 30 years ago I had surgery to remove nodules from my vocal cords. Since then I have not really gone back to singing as family plus heavy work obligations kept me very busy and my vocal cords were always a problem. My voice tired easily, could not 100 percent be relied upon, and I got complete laryngitis several times per year. Having retired recently I wanted to join a local ladies barbershop chorus. The director though was very worried about me damaging my vocal cords again, and I myself could feel my vocal cords being sore after our 2 hour practices.

She has an amazing eye and ear and is observing you the whole time, and quick to tell you when something is wrong with your voice or your body.

Diana also suggested several herbal treatments for me and I can really see how they are helping me (and that’s for someone who spent her life in the biological sciences and have been a little skeptical of herbal treatments).

At the end of my first sessions with Diana I finally got to sing for the first time and I was TOTALLY amazed. I could not believe that I could produce that sound, that volume and clarity and length to hold a note without any change in pitch.

From what I have experienced I would say all the testimonials you read on the Vocal Science and Repair Your Voice website are accurate. Diana has spent over 30 years of her life creating and fine tuning her techniques and it shows. She is a dedicated to your improvement but in a taskmaster sort of way. You have to dedicate yourself as well.

As for the cost — it is not insignificant. You WILL get results and I would do it all again with Diana. I wish I had looked for and found her about 20 years ago. It would have saved me years of frustration with my voice.

Speaking of Miracles: From Vocal Cord Nodule to Singing in a Choir! “The Impossible Possible Dream!”

This story is about one of my very dear clients, and now friend, Mary Ellen Stoll of Brockville, Ontario. Mary Ellen came to me sometime in Spring of 2016. She told me her story which I would like to share with you, my reader – which, evidently, has a very happy ending.

Mary Ellen told me that at the age of 22, she was diagnosed with a nodule on her vocal cord. She was suggested to undergo a vocal operation and she had undergone it. Her speaking voice, however, never came back to the normal voice she once had. So, at the age of 62, (in a few days, she will be 64), she had retired from being a manager for the Government of Ontario. Her secret desire always was to learn how to sing and, perhaps, even join a choir.., especially since she’s got some free time via her retirement from a very stressful job.

Given that, she decided to visit Brockville’s barbershop-type choir and speak to a choir director. He, right away, told her that she had to work on her speaking voice first and foremost, as he could hear that it was quite damaged. Mary Ellen looked me up on the internet, contacted me over the phone and, shortly after, drove over 4 hours to my studio for her first session. Our voice repair journey had begun!

As per usual, I started working on Mary Ellen’s speaking voice, assuring (via my very special speech exercises – coupled with certain body movements) the proper support, structure, placement and (as a result of the above) projection of her voice to its aimed destination.

The above are components of the wholesome mechanism, which allows the human voice to work in its fullest capacity and, nonetheless, with no pain or strain on the vocal anatomy. In fact, in 1999, the Toronto Star newspaper wrote an article about me, which was titled: “Not As Easy As It Sounds”. Indeed, it is not.

No doubt, it requires a lot of effort and energy from both parties involved – my client and myself. The reward, however, is (by common opinion) priceless – as the voice begins to sound crispy clear with the words well announced and pronounced.

Now it is about the part 2 for those who are interested to embark onto singing… After the speech part was conquered, Mary Ellen returned back to the choir director who, right away, noticed a big difference in Mary Ellen’s speaking voice! Now, he said: “Continue your vocal development and you will be able to join the chorus.”

Nonetheless, Mary Ellen and I had continued our journey through all the seasons of the year; she was driving in the winter time for over 5 hours to and from my studio… After a very hard, but very smart work, both of our efforts paid off a great deal! Mary Ellen joined the group, and have been singing with them ever since – happily ever after – participating in all kinds of competitions and performances.

Once the “impossible dream”, came true, it gave my dear client and friend health of voice (not to mention the health in general). It also gave her the knowledge of a completely new application of the speaking and singing voice while using the voice by design – concurrently complying with all of the components of the Vocal Science™ method and technique!

The Philosophy of the Vocal Science™ Method:

The Mechanics:
